Why Learn About Africa?

Through the unit study, you and your children will learn a lot about Africa and surprisingly, a lot about your life.

Africa shares many of the same historical events as North America. Both were colonized by Europe. Both histories displaced the native people. But what happened? North America became strong and independent while the African nations struggle in many ways.

Two major historical events changed the lives of the African people forever: The Berlin Conference of 1884 and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. An understanding of these two events helps us to understand the current situation of the African continent today.

Students will understand how important education is to the continuation of a nation, how missionaries changed both continents, and how democracy daily enables us to become who we are or who we are meant to be. You'll also learn how much we depend on Africa for supplies used in our everyday life. Your love for humanity will be changed forever!

The lesson plans are designed to teach multiple children of various ages. Recommended for grades 5-8 but includes plans for grades 2-5.

Subjects covered are history, geography, science, arts & crafts, vocabulary, music, cooking, storytelling, world religion, poetry, and dictation.

Ample flexibility is built-in. The unit was designed to bring out the creativity in the student (and the teacher!).
